چکیده

mantle coincided with the time when the greatest shell shoot was measured (Table 1, day 40). Our results support the view that, at least in mantle tissue, there is a direct correlation between shell formation and carbonic anhydrase activity. A major function of the gill is gaseous exchange, and the fact that gill carbonic anhydrase activity follows a similar pattern of change to that of new shell formation is difficult to explain on the basis of the present data unless there is a direct link between tissue metabolism and shell synthesis.

A kinetic analysis of the fructose 1,6-diphosphate-activated pyruvate kinase from the hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas.

Two major classes of pyruvate kinase are known to exist. Members of one class (type L) are typified by their activation by fructose 1,6-diphosphate, whereas those in the other class (type M) are not activated by this ligand (Kachmar & Boyer, 1953; Tanaka et al., 1967; Haeckel et al., 1968). The enzyme from the hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas (the common shore crab) is a type-L enzyme. It show...

An investigation of the interactions of the allosteric modifiers of pyruvate kinase with the enzyme from Carcinus maenas hepatopancreas.

1. Pyruvate kinase purified from the hepatopancrease of Carcinus maenas exhibited sigmoidal saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate phosphoenolpyruvate in the absence of the allosteric activator fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, but normal hyperbolic saturation was seen in the presence of this activator. The activation appears to be the result of a decrease in the s0.5 (phosphoenolpyruvate) ...

Gene discovery in Carcinus maenas and Homarus americanus via expressed sequence tags.

Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were produced for normalized cDNA libraries prepared from several tissues of 2 marine crustaceans, the green shore crab Carcinus maenas and the American lobster Homarus americanus. Tissues represented in the Carcinus library were anterior and posterior gills, hypodermis, heart, hepatopancreas, antennal gland, brain, testis, and skeletal muscle, obtained from anima...

Nitrogen metabolism of two portunid crabs, carcinus maenas and necora puber, during prolonged air exposure and subsequent recovery: a comparative study

Carcinus maenas and Necora puber were exposed to air for 72 h and 18 h, respectively, at 18 degreesC. Nitrogen excretion, blood and muscle ammonia content and blood urate and lactate content were recorded throughout the experimental emersion and following reimmersion (recovery period). During emersion, the rate of ammonia excretion was strongly reduced in both species, while urea and amine excr...

The Effect of Salinity on Cadmium Uptake by the Tissues of the Shore Crab Carcinus Maenas

Cadmium accumulation by the haemolymph, gills and carapace of the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) was significantly higher in dilute sea water. This was reflected in the whole-body cadmium concentrations. There was no salinity effect with the hepatopancreas or muscle cadmium concentration. Over a 68-day period, cadmium was steadily accumulated by the carapace, with the salinity effect becoming ...
